TRLOP

1. What is TRLOP?

TRLOP (Transluminal Occlusion of Perforator Veins) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat incompetent perforator veins introduced by Prof. Whitely in London. Perforator veins are faulty veins that allow abnormal blood flow between the deep and superficial venous systems. This abnormal flow can contribute to the development of varicose veins, leg swelling, skin changes, and even venous ulcers. The procedure involves inserting a thin radiofrequency (RF) or laser catheter directly into the perforator vein under ultrasound guidance. The RF energy generates controlled heat, causing the vein to collapse and seal shut, redirecting blood flow to healthier veins. Depending on the size of the perforator veins and patient preference, TRLOP can be performed under local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia for maximum comfort.

2. What to Expect on the Day of Your TRLOP Procedure

Your TRLOP procedure will be carried as daycase, typically lasting around 30 to 45 minutes.

Preparation:

The treatment area will be cleaned and marked, and an ultrasound scan will be performed to locate the incompetent perforator veins.

Anaesthesia:

A local anaesthetic will be applied to numb the area, ensuring you remain comfortable and awake during the procedure. However, general anaesthesia is available upon request, especially for larger veins or based on patient preference.

Treatment:

A small laser catheter is inserted through a tiny skin puncture into the perforator vein. The catheter delivers radiofrequency / laser energy to gently heat and seal the vein shut.

Post-Procedure Care:

A compression stocking will be applied to the treated leg, and you’ll be encouraged to walk shortly after the procedure to promote healthy blood flow. Most patients can return home the same day and resume normal activities within 24-48 hours.

3. What to Expect Following TRLOP Treatment

After your TRLOP procedure, you may experience mild bruising, tightness, or discomfort around the treated area, which typically resolves within a few days to weeks.

Compression Stockings:

You’ll be advised to wear compression stockings for 1-2 weeks to reduce swelling and support proper healing.

Activity:

Light walking is encouraged immediately after the procedure, while strenuous activities should be avoided for about a week.

Follow-Up Appointments:

A follow-up ultrasound will be scheduled within a week to confirm that the vein has closed properly.Recovery: Most patients recover quickly, with noticeable improvement in symptoms like leg swelling, heaviness, and discomfort.
