Radiofrequency Ablation

1. What is Radiofrequency Ablation for varicose veins and venous insufficiency (RFA)?

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), also known as Endovenous Radiofrequency Treatment (EVRFA), is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat varicose veins caused by venous insufficiency. This advanced technique involves inserting a thin catheter into the affected vein through a small incision. The catheter delivers radiofrequency energy, generating controlled heat that causes the vein walls to collapse, seal shut, and eventually be reabsorbed by the body. Blood flow is naturally redirected to healthier veins, relieving symptoms such as leg pain, swelling, and heaviness. RFA is highly effective, requires no general anaesthesia, and offers a quick recovery with minimal discomfort, making it a preferred alternative to traditional vein surgery. However, general anaesthesia is available if you prefer, ensuring complete comfort during the procedure.

2. What to Expect on the Day of Your RFA Procedure

On the day of your RFA treatment, you’ll be welcomed into a comfortable outpatient setting. The procedure typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes.

Here’s what to expect:

Preparation:

You’ll change into a gown, and the treatment area will be cleaned and marked.

Local Anaesthesia:

A local anaesthetic will be applied to numb the area, ensuring you remain comfortable and awake during the procedure.

General anaesthesia is also available if preferred.

Radiofrequency Treatment:

Under ultrasound guidance, a small catheter will be inserted into the vein. The catheter delivers radiofrequency energy to heat and close the vein gently.

Post-Procedure Care:

A compression stocking will be applied to the treated leg to support healing, and you’ll be encouraged to walk shortly after the procedure to promote blood flow. You can return home the same day, and most patients resume normal activities within 24 hours

After your RFA procedure, it’s normal to experience mild bruising, tightness, or discomfort along the treated vein, which usually resolves within a few days as part of the healing process.

Compression Stockings:

You’ll be advised to wear compression stockings for 1-2 weeks to reduce swelling and support proper healing.

Activity:

Light walking is encouraged immediately after the procedure, while strenuous activities should be avoided for about a week.

Follow-Up Appointments:

A follow-up ultrasound will be scheduled within the first 2 weeks to ensure the treated vein has closed properly.

Recovery:

Most patients experience rapid recovery with continued improvement in symptoms such as leg pain, swelling, and discomfort. While RFA offers long-lasting results, regular follow-up appointments help monitor your vein health and prevent potential complications.
