Endovenous Laser Ablation
1. What is Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA/EVLT)?
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), also known as Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT), is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat varicose veins caused by venous insufficiency. This advanced technique involves inserting a thin laser fiber into the affected vein through a small incision. The laser emits controlled heat, causing the vein walls to collapse and seal shut. Over time, the closed vein is naturally absorbed by the body, and blood flow is redirected to healthier veins.
EVLA/EVLT is highly effective, requires no general anesthesia, and offers a quick recovery with minimal discomfort, making it a preferred alternative to traditional vein surgery. However, general anaesthesia is available if you prefer, ensuring complete comfort during the procedure.

2. What to Expect on the Day of Your EVLA (EVLT) Procedure
On the day of your EVLA (EVLT) treatment, you’ll be welcomed into a comfortable outpatient setting. The procedure typically takes about 30 to 60 minutes.

Here’s what to expect:

Preparation:
You’ll change into a gown, and the treatment area will be cleaned and marked.
Local Anaesthesia:
A local anesthetic will be applied to numb the area, ensuring you remain comfortable and awake during the procedure.
Laser Treatment:
A small catheter will be inserted into the vein under ultrasound guidance, followed by the laser fibre. The laser is then activated to gently close the vein.
Post-Procedure Care:
A compression stocking will be applied to the treated leg to support healing, and you’ll be encouraged to walk shortly after the procedure to promote blood flow. You can return home the same day, and most patients resume normal activities within 24 hours.
3. What to Expect Following EVLA (EVLT)
After your EVLA (EVLT) procedure, you may experience mild bruising, tightness, or discomfort along the treated vein, which typically resolves within a few days. These are normal signs of the healing process.
Compression Stockings:
You’ll be advised to wear compression stockings for 1-2 weeks to reduce swelling and support vein closure.
Activity:
Light walking is encouraged immediately after the procedure, while strenuous exercise should be avoided for about a week.
Follow-Up Appointments:
You’ll have a follow-up ultrasound within the first 2 weeks to ensure the vein has closed properly.
Recovery:
Most patients return to normal activities quickly, with continued improvement in symptoms such as leg pain, swelling, and heaviness.
While EVLA/EVLT offers long-lasting results, regular follow-ups help maintain your vein health and detect any new issues early.
